Ornamental inking by Asfahani Ornamental inking by Asfahani
A while ago :icongalil-galad: wrote me a note:
"hi i love your art and your inking but i self cant ink that good
can you mabye please make a inking tutorial ??
i really want to know how you did it "

Okay, I tried. It is my first tutorial ever. It's only about the technique I use for the Tarot cards. But I hope it is useful for you, Elfje-laila!
Please forgive my bad English and any confusion - as I said: I never made a tutorial before.

But I would be very glad if some people get inspired to try inkwork too...

A tutorial from one of my favorite artists! WooooooHoooooo!

I'm right handed, but I still smear ink all over the place :cries: I generally try to start inking in the middle of the paper and then rotate the page when possible to fill the edges. Then I still smear. lol. :D

What I find amazing is your ability to get your blacks sooo, black. Your edges are so clean and crisp that it almost looks like block printing. You are a fantastic talent and with every new piece I fall in love with you more

Just WHOA.
The amounts of detail, the EVERYTHING is just overwhelming. I can do nothing but just stare in awe, wondering if I'll ever reach even half of the level of skills such as this...
And I really don't mean just the ink. Just EVERYTHING.

I use a very soft art eraser and my skechtes are very, very light drawn. So it's no problem. :) And most of the pencils are erased when I start with the details in ink.

Let the fresh inked area dry for 10-20 minutes. :)
I forgot to mention, sorry. (I am routine-blinded.:dead:)
I the light you can see if the ink is dry. When it looks dry wait five minutes longer.

Do you have certain titles of reference books you can recommend? I like collecting my resources too, and any tips would be super great.

I have two categories for inspirational material:
1. direct reference material
2. artists and art to get my head free.

1.
My essential book for all and everything:
Franz Sales Meyer: A Handbook of Ornament
Additional:
Everything about Art Noveau (Aubrey Beardsley!), many material from varying books and internet material about tattoos and tribals as well as japanese patterns and all forms of folklore art (for example Ainu, Aborigines, Azec... just to start with "A"). Google all archaic cultures you can think of and search for their patterns, ornaments and symbols. Greek and egyptian ornamentary are very useful!

Then, when you are overloaded, go to step 2 and get the head free. :D This are my little artsy helpers:

2.
Juxtapoz Illustration 1 (Well, everything from both the Juxtapoz magazine and their artbooks...)
Aya Takano, Yoshitoshi, Takato Yamamoto
Dream Spectres: Extreme Ukiyo-e: Sex, Blood & the Supernatural (Jack Hunter
Superflat art

Hope I could inspire you a little bit. Sales Meyer is obligatory. :)
